Grey Structure House Construction Process – A Step by Step Guide

Everyone’s dream is to build their home, and being knowledgeable about the process involved makes their coming home all the more seamless at every step. We at Multi Construction are engaged in providing lasting as well as budget-friendly solutions. The grey structure house phase is also one of the most critical steps in building a more secure residence. The grey structure construction work phase is when the property’s foundation along with framing is created. Below is a complete step-by-step process to learn how grey structure construction is conducted in Pakistan.

Step 1: Preparing the site

First of all, undesired trash, shrubs, plants, and already existing constructions need to be removed from the area. If demolition of the site is to be carried out, then good equipment is used with careful demolition. It provides space for good planning of work in lay out and excavation.

Step 2: Marking site layout

Following clearance, marking out is then carried out based on the building design. The location is marked by measurement marks to avoid errors in executing actual construction work. The construction planning makes sure walls, pillars, as well as utilities, are in their respective positions to avoid construction issues in the days to come.

Step 3: Excavation & earthwork

Excavation is carried out thereafter after planning is finished. It is foundation and column trenches excavation. The depth of foundations is based upon the design of the structure – typically, 2 feet in case of walls and nearly 4 feet in case of column footings. The ground is brought to readiness for all the subsequent construction stages by excavation. The ground stability is also created by excavation.

Step 4: Termite Proofing

Infestation with termite can cause weakness in a building. To prevent this, anti-termite chemicals like Bi-flex or Fiprokill are sprayed after excavation is done. The chemical prevents termite from affecting the foundation in the future, keeping the grey structure housing long-lasting without termite.

Step 5: Placement of Plain Cement Concrete (PCC)

a 3-inch thick layer of PCC is cast over the base of foundation in proportion of 1:4:8 (cement, sand, crush). It is formed as a solid horizontal base upon which footing as well as brickwork will follow. Thickness as well as proportion may vary depending upon design requirement as well as ground condition.

Step 6: Plinth Work/Foundations to Plinth Level

Brickwork is built in widths which are smaller in subsequent layers. Red bricks are used in general, but in more and more locations, fly ash bricks are used. A wall is typically built to plinth height with height being of 9-inch. The plinth is typically kept at approximately 2 feet below ground for prevention from damage from moisture as also from strength.

Step 7: Damp Proof Course (DPC)

For keeping damp from penetrating through the wall, horizontal as well as vertical DPC is used. The horizontal DPC is created by a bitumen-coated polythene over PCC. To use as vertical defense, proportion 1:3 or 1:4 is used for the cement-sand mortar layer. It is an important step in order to avoid dampness in the gray structure in the long term.

Step 8: Reinforced Column Footings

Column footings will carry the load of the structure. After base leveling with the assistance of PCC, reinforced footings are established with good quality steel (such as M60 grade). Fixed shuttering is executed, then concrete is cast to achieve a hard base of the column. Proper curing is implemented to avoid dehydration crack development.

Step 9: Backfill & Compaction

This plinth space is then filled with surplus excavation material, soil, and sand. The space is compacted in layers to provide a hard floor base. Poor compaction would lead to development of cracks later; and attention is to be paid at this stage to have a sound grey structure.

Step 10: Superstructure brickwork

Once plinth is constructed, work for overlying brickwork begins. Multi construction installs walls of 9-inch in thickness to height of ground floor to 10 feet and partitions or upper floor higher walls of 4.5-inch in thickness as per architectural design. Door, windows, ventilator space is left out during wall construction.

Step 11: Concrete columns and lintels

Reinforced concrete lintels and columns are constructed over windows and doors. The steel is fixed, shuttering is fitted, and concrete is poured to plans with drawings. It makes the building strong and bears load in an efficient manner throughout the grey structure house.

Step 12: Building slab & roof

Roof and slab construction is one of the final steps to complete the grey structure. Steel bars are fixed in roofs and slabs by means of reference to drawings. Electric pipes are fixed in advance to avoid cut-outs later. Concrete is leveled with care after being placed to provide proper curing to maintain strength.

Step 13: Overhead & Underground Water Tank Building

RCC overhead water tanks are constructed by drafting structural drawings. Waterproof seal is utilized to avoid water leaks. RCC water tanks are utilized to offer water pressure supply as well as supply water in your home.

Step 14: Waterproof work

Waterproofing is carried out over roofs with bitumen, polythene sheets, brick tiles, and with the help of mud mortar. A flood coat of cold bitumen is also applied over the RCC slab to render water seepage resistance to the house.

Step 15: Other Important Work to be Done in Grey

Structure

To finish del Grey’s structure house, various other but necessary jobs are carried out:

  1. Boundary wall construction and side passage construction
  2. Installation of Gas Pipelines & Sewerage Infrastructure
  3. Electricity and plumbing installations
  4. Septic tank drain system in ground
  5. Cleaning at End-of-Life

These processes ensure all is in place to have paint, plaster, woodwork, or tiling added to finish it.
